First large direct broadcasting satellite of China will be launched this month, which could see the ending of a countrywide ban on use of privately owned satellite dishes, as per state press on October 23, 2006, reports XINUHA online news agency.
SINOSAT-2 launch is scheduled for 29 October 2006 from Xichang launch center in Sichuan province of southwest China & is intended to bring TV coverage to each 'farming household' present in the country. Thus, it will bring remote medical benefits & educational shows for farmers, as per Sun Laiyan, China National Space Administration chief.
SINOSAT-2 is designed & developed single-handedly by China & has a mission life of 15 years. The satellite will provide television & radio transmission, direct TV, digital films & broadband.
As per the original plan, SINOSAT-2 was scheduled for launch in 2005 but was delayed due to direct broadcast satellite TV programs governing laws. These laws are presently being revised.
Min Changning, SINOSAT-2 chief engineer, said that SINSOSAT-2 will become the highlight of satellite industry & hopefully, will prompt revision of the law, Decree 129.
Decree 129 was issued in 1993 by State Council of China to ban setups of satellite dishes by people & organizations to receive overseas programs. State Administration is now considering revisions of the law.
"If people are allowed to use satellite dishes, over hundred million homes in China will have access to satellite TV by 2011," said an analyst at RNCOS. With around 400 million TV sets, China has a tremendous potential for satellite television.
People in remote areas will especially be benefited by SINOSAT-2. They'll be able to receive direct transmission. The diameter of dishes will measure between 0.45-0.6 meter. Even at a fee of 1 Yuan (12 US cents) per channel, direct satellite television broadcasting is estimated to generate annual revenue of over US $ 1.8 billion between 2008-2017.
