Passports, luggage, pharmaceuticals, livestock - RFID is making its mark in all major sectors in the industry but concerns over its privacy implications need to be addressed to help this technology gain acceptance among the locals, as per a six-month study conducted by EU.
Viviane Reding, Information society & media commissioner said that Europeans require assurance that the RFID tags wouldn't be utilized for large scale surveillance & EU would also consider the legislation that concerns RFID & privacy.
Nearly, 2,200 organizations & individuals were examined in the study of which just 15% believed that the industry would fair well on regulating the use of RFID tags itself. However, 55% of those surveyed emphasized the need for new laws that would ensure proper privacy & also that the information wouldn't be used improperly from RFID tags. Many people wished that they could destroy the RFID chips if necessary.
European RFID industry is growing at a slower pace compared to other regions though nations like Germany have already incorporated the RFID technology in passports.
As per RNCOS report "RFID Industry (2005-2007) - An Update (Insight to European Market)", European RFID market is expected to reach US $ 3.1 Billion by 2008 and as per EU, by 2015, around a trillion RFID chips will be under use.
European market & regulators need to respond actively to privacy concerns of people, said Reding, referring to the study. Majority of people believe that RFID technology can bring advantages provided they are assured of their privacy. She said that this is a prime challenge that industry needs to address for wide acceptance of RFID.
EU said that final decisions will be taken by the end of this year and the new laws, if needed, will be applied in 2007.
