Jun 25, 2007

Aussie doctors hardly investigate the reason for side effects of their medication according to the survey conducted by Commonwealth fund.

The survey conducted by Commonwealth fund which includes opinions of 6,000 doctors in New Zealand, Australia, US, UK, Germany, Netherlands & Canada discovered that Aussie doctors hardly investigate the reason for side effects of their medication, according to news published in The Australian. The study was based on various factors like medical errors, use of IT, access to after hours care & capacity of doctors for treating chronic illness.

In 2005, federal govt. announced a $ 247 Million program for chronic diseases to offer multi-disciplinary healthcare services for patients suffering from diseases like asthma, diabetes mental illness & diabetes.

Only 69% of Australian doctors admitted of being well prepared for treating patients suffering from chronic illness, compared to 93% in Germany & 76% in Britain. Just 50% of Australian General Practitioners (GPs) admitted that their practice was good enough to treat patients with mental health illness. Less than 50% regularly gave chronic disease patients a plan that will allow them to manage their condition while they are at home.

Just one third of practices in Australia made use of multi-disciplinary teams for curing patients with chronic illness, much lower than 80% of practitioners in Britain.

General practice is transforming from traditional approach to multi-disciplinary teams in Australia, but a lot of work is still required, commented Australian Division of GPs' chairman, Tony Hobbs.

However, doctors in Australia performed well as far as the use of IT services was concerned, 90% of doctors said they regularly received computerized alerts regarding harmful drugs.

"Australia is among the most speedily growing countries in e-Health sector, and this has made significant advancements possible through the application and development of products as well as services in key areas, such as telemedicine, online data services, and management software," as per the report "
Australian Healthcare IT Market Analysis" published by RNCOS.

After hours healthcare services were better in Australia with 81% of doctors providing after hours access to a doctor or a nurse compared to 47% in Canada & 40% in US.
