Four leading Vietnamese telecom operators are engaged in cut-throat competition of becoming the first 3G services provider in the country.
Four leading telecom operators in Vietnam are intensively competing to become the first 3G services provider in the country after receiving licenses in early April 2009, as reported by ANTARANEWS.
Vietnam seems all prepared to emerge as a leading mobile market in the Asian region, as the total number of mobile subscribers will inflate to 120 Million by the end of 2014, which is equivalent to the current subscriber base in Japan. It is also poised to become one of the fastest developing markets. Vietnamese mobile operators are anticipated to add 53 Million users in the next five years to provide strong fundamentals for the 3G equipment vendors. Believing that 3G services will be available in the market by end-2009, the total number of subscribers of this technology will reach nearly 43 Million, equivalent to 36% of total subscriber base by 2014.
VinaPhone, Viettel, MobiFone and a joint venture between Hanoi Telecom and EVN Telecom are increasingly concentrating on completing the technical capabilities essential to offer 3G services to millions of mobile phone subscribers in Vietnam.
Telecom Regulator MIC will officially give licenses after the three months of announcement, to accelerate the deployment. The Vietnamese telecom regulator has directed all the operators to launch the 3G services at the commercial level within nine months of getting their licenses. All the four giants will be officially given licenses as soon as they deposit a stipulated amount of 8.1 Trillion Dong ($460 Million) into the government account.
With the population base of 86 Million and rapidly growing economy, Vietnam represents the potential market for future growth in 3G services. Mobile growth dynamics make it an ideal place to set up an international growth platform.
According to industry experts, it is expected that telecom operators will show impatience to acquire long term contracts from network vendors, which, in turn, will help Vietnam to realize its ambitious goal.
According to a Research Analyst at RNCOS, “Vietnam has given preference to domestic operators for providing third generation services to millions of mobile users in the next few months. Moreover, the launch of 3G services will not only help the operators to raise their revenue but will also make it easier for the millions of users to access a range of value-added services.”
