Thailand Promotes Medical Tourism

May 18, 2007

Thailand is one of the most popularly visited countries for its medical facilities. It offers safe and healthy services at reasonable prices. Thai government has sought several promotion methods for this industry in the future.

As per the news published on
Travel Daily News, Thailand is one of the favorite tourist destinations in Asia.  An increasing number of tourists visit the country to seek medical services as this country has proved its vast and unbeatable potential in the health and service sector.

Mr. Sangiam Ekachote, honourary secretary of ATTA (Association of Thai Travel Agents), said in news published on
Travel Daily News “Thailand has excellent potentialities for being the hub in medical tourism. The private hospitals in Thailand are staffed by highly qualified medical staff and equipped with latest technologies, which adds a new dimension to its tradition of hospitality. There are overseas trained doctors and specialists while multilingual staff ensure that there are no communication barriers.”

The commendable part of the health and service sector of Thailand is that it attracts people from all over the world and not solely from a particular region or country. It has an excellent blend of high quality care along with clean, safe and modern infrastructure. Lower labor costs lead to a significant cost saving on procedures.

Since many years, Thailand has been a preferred destination for medical tourists. It has growing number of hospitals with JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) certification. More than a million people travel to Thailand for cosmetic surgery, cutting edge cardinal treatment etc. It also offers cardiac surgery and organ transplant at costs much lower than US and Europe.

The Thai government has recognized the strong potential of the medical tourism and its value in the overall tourism industry. So several initiatives have been taken to promote this sector. Plans have been made to invest US$10-15 Billion in the next ten years for construction of new hospitals. Additionally, to promote medical tourism, visa procedures for foreign medical patients have been simplified and students are being funded to attain higher medical education abroad on the clause that they will serve in Thailand after they have completed their medical education.

As per a research analyst at
RNCOS, “The present condition of Thailand in the world is that it represents an all benefit situation for both the patients and the service providers. Thailand cannot sit back on its glory as India and some of the previous Soviet Union Bloc countries are emerging as new challenge for it. It must keep a track of the world market, world trends and the position that it occupies”.
