With more and more consumers preferring Internet on their mobile phones, the number of mobile web users in the UK is growing at a pace faster than that of the US.
According to new research, more and more people now use mobile Internet and the number is equivalent to nearly 1/5th of PC based Internet audience. The research done by Telephia (the leading provider of organized consumer research to mobile media and telecom markets in world) and comScore (world leader in digital world measuring) found, 5.7 million residents of UK accessed the Web through their mobile phones in January this year (2007). Spannerworks published this in news.
Mobile Internet market of UK, at 19% of PC based Web audience, is somewhat more developed than that of the US. The US market had 17% (30 million) of 176 million PC Internet users who accessed the Internet via a mobile phone in the same month.
“The Mobile Web is at an early state of development, but we expect Mobile Web usage to grow as phone performance improves, sites optimize their content for the small screen and operators fine tune their tariffs, enabling consumers to take full advantage of mobile phone capabilities, content and convenience,” said Bob Ivins, managing director for comScore in news published on Utalk Marketing.
Key features like mobile web and mobile email are gaining much popularity in the UK, owing to their ease of use, and improved speed of downloads and connection. Brand marketers can exploit this opportunity for promoting their products & services to customers via mobile websites, thereby helping in driving web traffic & maximizing revenues.
Mobile web market’s share is also going upwards due to devices such as the cell phones allow interaction to occur virtually at any place and at point in time. Some of the industry experts suggest that there will be a rise in data use in next year mainly because of a wider installed base of web-enabled cell phones, user education, enhanced user experience, and new price points that are consumer friendly.
As per a research analyst at RNCOS, “Growing tech savvy, cell phone users anticipate that their phones should give them additional features, added flexibility, and desktop’s handiness while they move. Internet’s growth and mobile networks’ success indicate that the upcoming trend is going to be a growth in demand for mobile access to web applications.”
