Kenyan Tourism Industry Earnings to Hit US$ 1 Billion by 2007

May 01, 2007

Kenya's tourism industry will reach US$ 1 Billion in earnings by 2007 provided growth continues at a good pace, according to KTB.

As per the statistics released by KTB (Kenya Tourist Board), Kenyan tourism industry is estimated to generate US$ 780 Million by 2006, an increase of 17% from 2005 (US$ 648 Million). With a similar increase in 2007, the industry is expected to reach US$ 1 Billion mark, strengthening its ranking as the biggest earner of foreign exchange in Kenya

In first 9 months of 2006, tourist arrivals increased by almost 12% compared to 2005, a trend, which is likely to carry on. Since number of visitors, generally, increases during last quarter. KTB has attributed the ongoing growth to focused marketing innovations in traditional markets, and entries into formerly untapped regions like Far East & China, according to news published in All Africa

KTB said that tourism earnings have increased by US$ 27 Million in first 9 months of this year compared to the same period year-on-year to reach US$ 491 Million. KTB is optimistic that the industry will meet the US$ 780 Billion target set for 2006 as number of tourists are expected to increase in November & December

However, KTB has expressed concerns over overstretched facilities, mainly beds, in Kenyan classified hotels, as a key challenge to the sector. Just 39,000 bed capacity is estimated in the classified hotels

As per an analyst at RNCOS, specializing in the tourism industry, "Kenya is among the first few nations in Africa to have adopted ecotourism that ensures preservation of the delicate ecosystem in which Kenyan tourist spots are situated. However, improper road network & inadequate lodging facilities are hindering the growth of Kenyan Tourism Industry."
