India For Early Implementation Of LNG Agreement With Iran

May 07, 2007

India plans to enter into premature agreement with Iran for the pipeline project considering ecological concerns and to support growing demand of natural fuel.

Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Murli Deora has stressed on the need for a premature completion of (LNG) liquefied natural gas agreement and restated India's dedication to gas pipeline venture during a meeting with his counterpart Mr Kazem Vaziri Hamaneh, the oil Minister, and the President of Iran, Mr Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in Tehran. Mr Deora visited Tehran on April 25-26, as per the news published on
Moneycontrol.

At an assembly in Tehran with Indian Oil Minister Murli Deora, President Ahmadinejad said, "The agreements made between Iran and India in different fields particularly in the energy sector will help speed up the development of the two countries,” "This indicates multilateral cooperation in the energy sector is important to Iran for it contributes to regional peace and development of both countries," he added, in news published on
Press TV.

India also articulated intentions of acquiring a supplementary capacity of 2.5 million tons of LNG per year. Iran is expecting  price hike for LNG after a rise in worldwide oil prices. The price of LNG is related to crude oil prices that increased to $75 per barrel in 2006.

Hydrocarbon Vision 2025 defined India's gas necessities in austere stipulations: from 49 bcm in 2006-07, India's requirement for gas is projected to climb 125 bcm by 2024-25. In contrast, extraction from existing fields and unearthing is 52 bcm, leaving an opening of 75 bcm to be acquired from fresh domestic discoveries and from trade in.

Natural gas is predicted to be greatest rising energy source in India for an array of causes incorporating ecological apprehension, fuel diversification for energy protection concerns, market deregulation and price. In addition LNG is competitive in contrast with other sources like naphtha, crude and coal.

According to research analyst at
RNCOS, “As India maintains the growth, economic boom will thrust per capita energy consumption upwards and rising distress for environmental supervision would amplify the eminence of natural gas in energy assortment. Natural gas, produced domestically, traditionally or non-conventionally, or imported from foreign sources through pipeline, will have its significant position to help India stimulate its budding economy”.
