Brazil will setup a thermal power plant in Ghana to help the African country in addressing its energy woes.
Unpredictability in Ghana's power supply is among the major hindrances to the economic growth of this African country. Seeing this, Brazil has put forward a helping hand to assist Ghana in addressing its energy woes by setting up a thermal power plant in the country.
Ghana needs around 2 GW of electricity. However, it is only able to produce 1.2 GW at present, which is a major setback to nation's overall growth.
"In these regions, when governments plan to make developments in country's infrastructure, at most what they can think of is improving country's transport network. Electricity is still a luxurious commodity in these places. Things are improving, but unfortunately at a very slow pace," said an analyst at RNCOS.
Key problem area for Ghana is its electricity infrastructure, which includes power plants, metering, distribution & transmission lines. The infrastructure is expensive to develop, maintain, and operate. Financing these products is challenging. State-owned firms are failing to recover the investments they had made due to inefficiencies, improper bill collection process & inability to employ cost-reflective tariffs and it therefore, becomes highly improbable for them to invest in future maintenance or expansion.
Ghana's President John Agyekum Kufuor showed his gratefulness to Brazilian President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and described him as a genuine & sincere leader for offering a genuine helping hand to support Africa.
He believed that Ghana would benefit from Brazil's experience in developing alternate energy resources. To make the most of these opportunities, Ghana needs to determine its needs, priorities & agenda.
"Brazil's assistance will give a lot of hope to Ghana. However, these dependencies need to be eliminated in future. For instance, use of solar power is not seen much in the country. Solar panels can be used to meet the rising electricity demand," the analyst said.
