T-Mobile Tops FCC Auction, Ready to Expand in USA Market

Apr 27, 2007

T-mobile topped the FCC auction by winning maximum number of licenses and is now all set to improve its market presence in the US.

T-Mobile emerged as a dominant winner in the FCC's (Federal Communication Commission) recently concluded AWS (Advanced Wireless Services) auction that had 1,087 licenses at stake worth $ 14 billion (approx).

However, T-mobile refused on disclosing its plans regarding the earned licenses due to the restrictions imposed by FCC. A unit of Deutsche Telekom in Germany, T-Mobile bid around $4.2 billion for these licenses spread over continental US, Hawaii, Alaska & Puerto Rico. The licenses also include Chicago, L.A. & NY city. Overall, 120 licenses were acquired by T-Mobile.

"T-Mobile, currently, stands at fourth position in the list of USA's largest cellular service providers. With these licenses, T-Mobile will definitely aim to become a market leader in US mobile industry. However, winning these licenses is just a start. T-Mobile needs to develop an optimum strategy if it wants to make best out of these licenses," said an analyst at RNCOS.

Verizon Wireless finished with a distant second with 13 licenses at around $ 2.8 billion. If all bids are collected, the auction will be known for the highest money that has ever been raised in spectrum auctions.

President of wireless trade association, Steve Largent, gave full points to FCC for organizing a 'successful & smooth auction' and highlighted the importance of upcoming 700-megahertz (MHz) auction in the field of wireless services and public safety.
