Russia will Market Biofuel to Europe

Apr 04, 2007

Russia is going to manufacture two plants for generating biofuel.

Presently, for bio-energy production from wood granules, Russia uses only forestry industry ravage.

Alexander Gordeyev, Russian agriculture minister, stated that Russia is going to manufacture two plants for generating bio-fuel. As per Gordeyev, construction of the bio-ethanol processing plant has established in Omsk and another plant employed in bio-diesel production would be built in western division of country, as per news published on
Russia-IC.

“EU is supposed to make up not less than 5.75% of total motor fuel volume by 2010”, as observed by minister. European countries are expected to have raw materials or bio-fuels from Russia.

Russia uses rape to produce biodiesel and grain to roll out bioethanol. In Omsk region, first pilot project is under construction for processing grain into bioethanol. According to minister, “Siberia has enough potential to yield five to seven million tones of grain to produce bio-fuel worth several hundred million dollars. The similar project is to be launched in Western Russia”, as per news published on
Biofuels.ru.

Presently, for bio-energy production from wood granules, Russia uses only forestry industry ravage. Mainly granules are exported while wood granules utilization is limited domestically. Now, rapeseed oil produces 80% bio-diesel in EU. Production of Russian rapeseed is small & variable. Soybean oil & palm oil are being considered by EU countries as potential raw material to produce biodiesel. If these two oils are proved better than rapeseed, then demand of Russian rapeseed oil may fall. Area under rape plantation Russia is supposed to increase extensively this spring as response to growing biofuel demand from Europe.

According to the research analysts at
RNCOS, about 20 million hectares of arable land is not used by Russia and volume of biomass in country is approx. 1 billion tones. This basically consists of forest sources, but agriculture has vast prospective for production of bio-energy from oilseeds & wheat. Russia is expected to be a rapeseed producer. Rapeseed is a raw material to produce biodiesel in Europe, but this fuel could be produced domestically also.
