Nations Gearing Up For Mobile TV

Switzerland, Czech Republic & China are among the nations who recently joined the increasing number of nations testing their Mobile TV service.

Switzerland is now included among those nations, which are testing broadcast mobile television service using DVB-H technology, extensively supported by mobile operators but presently hindered by existing deficient spectrum.

Swisscom Broadcast, a division of Swisscom will recently begin trials of Mobile TV, which are scheduled to run till January 2007. In the trial period, around 200 locals in Berne will test mobile television survive through DVB-H technology. The trial is in association with Orange & Sunrise to analyze whether DVB-H can meet public needs to provide mobile TV & radio.

"DVB-H technology makes an effective utilization of available spectrum and is, therefore, attracting mobile operators," according to a senior analyst at
RNCOS.

The mobile TV service will use broadcast towers, which will directly transmit content to mobile handsets, along with 3G networks to offer feed back channels that allow interactive services.

Switzerland's European counterpart Czech Republic has also launched mobile TV trials in the nation to offer downloadable interactive broadcast programs to its subscribers. T-mobile, in association with Gemalto announced the launch of a two-month trial and plans a final launch by 2007. Like, Swisscom, T-mobile will also uses DVB-H technology along with Gemalto's interactive technology.

Like European nations, China is also gearing towards the development of mobile TV by implementing an exclusive mobile TV standard. The State Administration of Radio, Film & Television expects mobile TV operators to use StiMi (Satellite Terrestrial Interactive Multi-service Infrastructure) standard that has been developed by Chinese researchers. It could give China an economic freedom from rival international standards, allowing the country to become a leader in the field of converging communications.

Number of mobile users in China has surpassed the number of television households. There are presently 350 Million households with Television access & 420 Million mobile subscribers in China. The number of mobile subscribers, as per
RNCOS report "China Telecom Sector Analysis (2006-2007)" will increase to 446.59 Million by the end of 2006 & 640 Million by 2010.
