Healthcare Industry Embracing Wireless Technology to Improve Services

Apr 11, 2009

Wireless technology will transform the healthcare industry by increasing the mobility of patients and physicians, remotely managing diseases and reducing the cost incurred in wired connectivity.

According to CTIA – the Wireless Association, the wireless technology will revolutionize the way healthcare industry works by increasing the usage of the technology to make day to day operations easy and simple, as reported by TMCnet.

With growing need for portable computing applications, wireless technology has become quite popular to connect two or more components with radio or infrared waves instead of physical connections. There is strong need for more advanced technologies in the hospitals to provide better healthcare services to growing elder population and to manage other diseases remotely like illnesses, diabetes and strokes anytime and anywhere.

Moreover, the integration of new sensor technologies with wireless technology can be very effective to improve the services offered by hospitals. Furthermore, Wide Area Networks (WLANs) are an effective and cheaper medium of providing connectivity in old buildings. Other tasks that can be made easier by wireless technology are accessing and updating electronic medical records (EMR) and checking bar coded wristbands and medication packages of patient with the physician prescriptions. Some hospitals even use the technology for voice communication.

While the healthcare organizations have shown slow response to the adoption of wireless technology, some have found that it is a reliable method to reduce the cost and improve the quality of service. Moreover, it even reduces dependence on physical wired connections, enhances the mobility of professionals and patients and improves the efficacy of treatments.

According to a Research Analyst at RNCOS, “The healthcare is a vast and very complex sector that requires complete transparency in every segment, including vendors, government regulators, policy makers and providers, to introduce technology for achieving favorable, steady cost-to-benefit ratio. The integration of wireless technology will help to overcome the inefficiency and waste in the healthcare industry to revolutionize health and preventive care. New technological innovations are mandatory to provide better healthcare to increasing aging population and to remotely cope with the diseases.”
