Broadband usage has almost doubled in Ireland households, as per latest figures from CSO.
In Q1 2006, more than 13% of Irish households had access to broadband connection, almost double from 7% of households in Q3 2005, as per latest CSO (Central Statistics Office) survey. This means, 1 in every 8 households in Ireland now has access to broadband Internet.
Nearly, 61% of Irish businesses (with ten or more than ten employees) had broadband access in Q1 2006, an increase of 48% from 2005 & double from 31% in 2004. This shows nearly all businesses in Ireland now have access to Internet with majority going for broadband. This has resulted a significant drop in use of ISDN & modems.
In 2006, 59% of households are estimated to have a computer at home, up from 46% in 2004. Households with Internet access on their home computers continue to increase in numbers, with 49% of Irish households having access to Internet access. More than 83% of households, having computer at home use it for accessing the Internet.
The figures released by CSO were determined through survey of Internet usage by Irish households & businesses conducted in Q1 2006.
"Despite the growth shown by Irish broadband sector, there are still major inconsistencies regarding broadband cost & availability in Ireland that are acting as major hurdles faced by the sector," said an analyst at RNCOS.
A recent report by NCC (National Competitiveness Council) pointed out improvements in ICT (Information & Communications Technology), which have enhanced international commerce, political relations, social interaction & development issues. ICT expenditure in Ireland is near about 15% but Ireland still needs a lot of improvement regarding the usage of broadband in the country.
