Australia Broadband is a Disgrace: Expert

Apr 30, 2007

News Corp chairman, Rupert Murdoch has termed Internet infrastructure in Australia a 'disgrace' that the govt. should fix.

Mr. Rupert Murdoch, Chief executive & chairman of News Corp (The Australian publisher) has termed nation's poor broadband services a 'disgrace'. He has urged the govt. & Telstra to invest billions to improve speed of download in Australia and to extend the high-speed Internet service to each household in the nation. If it has been in done in Japan & South Korea, it can be done here as well.

He said that the broadband provided in Australia is different from real broadband where the speed is as high as 20 Mbps. People are spending plenty of time on their desktops or notebooks but only a few million people are using broadband and are not even getting 1 Mbps speed.

About 50-70% homes in US have broadband access, he continued. Australia will be left behind & it will have to pay for this.

Telstra, recently, launched its high-speed broadband Internet service but due to regulatory constrains, the service is only limited to regions where its competitors are already providing broadband services.

Experts believe that Mr. Murdoch's comments on Australian broadband service would shake up the govt. & could force it to take immediate actions to improve broadband services in the country.

"Many experts & research reports have condemned the broadband service in Australia but their comments have always been overlooked. Mr. Murdoch's comments are strong, but it is the govt. that needs to answer these criticisms & make necessary investments to improve the quality of broadband service in Australia," said an analyst at RNCOS.

He further commented, "Poor quality of service, high costs & low service uptake levels are the key problems that govt. needs to address to improve the service."
