As mobile handset sales are booming in Australia, customers look for third-generation phones that offer better-inbuilt cameras & MP3 music-players.
Shaun Colligan, chief of Nokia Australia, told 'The Australian' that he expected total mobile handset shipments of about 9 Million for the year 2007.
"We see style and form factor continuing to be a big influence in the market and 3G is starting to play a more important role. At Nokia, we have an absolute focus on multimedia offering music, images and content on our handsets", said Mr. Colligan.
According to Graham Chalker, CEO of the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA), "The mobile telephone industry is positioned for a new strong phase of growth with the introduction of 3G mobile technology."
3G-subscriber base in Australia has been relatively petite and growing slowly in comparison to Asian and European markets. But, with the full impact of 3G services coming into effect, the Australian Mobile sector will develop further in the years to come.
Operators are now doing extensive marketing for various services offered by them, and many of these services are drawing attention. Music downloads; streaming video (mainly sports) & adult content provide the most imminent potential. Despite the fact that 3G technology is a bit expensive to be habitual with, a majority of mobile subscribers are looking to adopt it, as a result of which the technology may have a robust future worldwide.
"Mobile industry of Australia is witnessing the beginning of a revolution where people have started using their 3G handsets not only to communicate but also to receive and spread all kinds of content and information. As the customers demand increases, Australia has the ability to get into the competition with highest mobile subscriber base of worldwide giants like: Japan, Hong Kong and other countries," said an analyst at RNCOS.
There's been a dramatic growth it the Third generation technology in Australia over the past several years, however the supply face of capacity and efficiency will gain financial benefits in the mid-term, rather than the prevalent adoption of the multimedia services.
