Mobile Broadband Set to Grow on Low Penetration

Mar 07, 2009

Mobile broadband industry holds tremendous growth potential considering the low penetration and good performance by the industry amidst global economic slowdown.

According to new studies conducted by EITO (European Information Technology Observatory), a market research firm, and GSMA (GSM Association), mobile broadband industry is expected to continue growing, as reported by compareandsave.

EITO in its study revealed that UK’s mobile broadband industry will lead the Europe with 9.8% growth to generate revenue of around £6.34 Billion in 2009. Mobile data services all around the world are witnessing strong growth and are expected to reach €124 Billion by growing 16% in 2009. According to GSMA’s mobile broadband survey, it is estimated that from 4 Billion mobile connections worldwide, nearly 100 Million are mobile broadband, while 1.1 Billion people access broadband through fixed-line connections, which means merely one sixth of the total world’s population have access to broadband. Such low penetration reflects immense growth opportunities for mobile broadband service providers.

Despite deepening recession, mobile broadband industry is exhibiting strong growth by adding more applications and computing platforms to existing service portfolio. This also shows that the industry is immune to the economic meltdown.

Mobile telecommunications has continued to be a growth market, despite economic slowdown, on account of new applications and attractive devices. The package bundles have cushioned the mobile broadband market from the adverse impacts of the beleaguered economy. Moreover, the availability of small computing devices along with lucrative mobile broadband deals made the packages attractive enough to draw more and more consumers.

Besides, growing traffic to data that constitutes around one quarter of the overall mobile telecommunications turnover has accelerated the growth momentum of mobile communications. UK will lead the mobile telecommunication revolution in Europe with substantially higher average growth rate across the continent. The British Communication Minister reveals that the broadband will be available throughout the country by 2012.

According to a Research Analyst at RNCOS, “Although the ongoing recession has had a significant impact on several industries, mobile broadband is the only sector weathering the storm and performing much well. Mobile broadband has witnessed huge success and is set to grow in future despite tough conditions.”
