Global Tourism to Bounce Back Soon

Mar 25, 2009

UNWTO expects that the world tourism industry will soon recover, despite the economic recession, and improve its image of a key employer and significant contributor to the economy.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has expressed hope that the global tourism industry will recover even stronger from the global recession, as reported by UN NEWS CENTRE.

UNWTO has said that the global tourism industry will either stay stable or fall by nearly 2% in 2009. According to UNWTO’s report, economic downturn may reverse the historic four-year gain made by the tourism industry in the overseas tourism. International tourist arrivals soared to 924 Million, an increase of 16 Million or 2% over 2007. However, the growth became stagnant in the latter half of 2008, giving the hardest blow to Europe.

The beleaguered global tourism industry is projected to continue its downward journey in the near future. But according to UNWTO, the sector is expected to play critical role in the recovery of world economy from the recession. Interestingly, such crises may often open doors of opportunities as they call for immense efforts.

Asia and the Pacific region are anticipated to see growth in their tourism sectors, but at a slower pace as compared to previous years. The Middle East and Africa will also follow the same trend.

Although it is difficult to estimate precisely about the duration for which the current crisis is going to prevail, it is definite that the tourism industry would be a major contributor to the recovery process due to its distinct resurgence capability and huge potential in generating employment as well as sustainability.

According to a Research Analyst at RNCOS, “Tourism industry is a vital part of several countries economies across the world. The sector is often regarded as a green sector and potential employment generator. However, it will be too early to predict the further impacts of the crisis on the industry, but global tourism is expected to rebound as soon as the global economic conditions become better.”
