To provide clean and safe food to visitors during Olympics, Beijing is taking every necessary action. It has decided to set up food safety center at games venues and would intensify the inspection process.
The Beijing Municipal Food Safety Supervision and Coordination Office has decided to set up a center for food safety in cooperation with Organization Committee of the Beijing Olympics, Olympics Security Command Center, and officials at various games venues, as reported by Chinadaily.
This initiative is necessary to ensure safe and clean food for people who will come during Olympic Games in Beijing. It is also a part of Beijing’s assurance to the International Olympic Committee to provide safe food during games. The center will check the food quality and raising alarm in case of emergency. The food will be categorized into 10 categories constituted from 345 items. The precaution is necessary to prevent any terrorist strikes on the food supply network during the event.
Also, officials will be educated about the consumer rights and IPRs of the visitors who will come to see the Olympic Games. Moreover, the concerned authorities will also intensify their inspections in hotels, restaurants and Olympic venues so that the quality standard is maintained.
Vice Minister of China’s Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, Pu Changcheng, said that in 2007, 16 different types of food production centers were closed. These centers were producing different kinds of food products like milk powder without licenses.
Several reasons are responsible behind this decision of the office. In 2007, several cases of adulterated foods, which were imported from China, were filed by the American citizens. The recall of lead-tainted toys, which include lead-tainted bracelets and Aqua Dot toys, has worsened the situation. Consequently, the “Made in China” label is losing its credibility.
So the authorities are very much concerned about food safety. They do not want to take any chance during Olympics. Consequently, all the illegal methods of producing and processing food from non-food items and recycled food items have been eliminated. Moreover, the authorities have started tracking unlicensed food producers and vendors from January 1, 2008.
According to a Research Analyst at RNCOS, “The food industry of China is blamed for producing unsafe food around the world. This accusation has raised questions on the quality standards and now, even Chinese people have started doubting quality of foods produced in their own country. However, the new initiative will help in boosting the reliability of food and increase the number of visitors during games.”
