Americans Waking Up to Benefits of Organic Food

Feb 13, 2009

The trend of adding organic food to diet among US citizens is fast growing as people become more aware of health and environmental benefits of organic food.

The trend of using organic foods is becoming more popular in the US with increasing acceptance by people. In the last decade, the organic food sales surged 20%, prompting grocery stores to devote a separate section to organic food items in the food department.

As per Healthy Eating Report for the year 2008 by Nielsen, in the US, organic food generated $4.9 Billion in sales during 2008, an increase of 16% from the previous year and 132% from 2004. Besides, food products labeled as ‘natural’ recorded revenue of $22.3 Billion during 2008, a rise of 10% against 2007 and 37% from 2004. The sales of antioxidants climbed 11% to $1.9 Billion in 2008 against 2007 and up 147% from 2004.

Some health professionals claim that the consumption of organic foods is good for health and many environmentalists believe that organic foods processing does not cause any damage to the environment. Both these factors are encouraging people to include organic foods in their diet.

Although a large number of consumers are trying to reduce their grocery bills, some believe that stop buying organic products they are accustomed to isn’t an option. Consumers typically buy organic vegetables and fruits for health reasons.

Moreover, the grocery stores in the US provide over 1,000 organic products ranging from tortilla chips and olive oil to eggs and milk, and the list is continuously growing with consumer demand. As the trend of including organic products in the diet is gaining momentum, retailers are providing organic versions of many popular products.

However, the implications of consuming organic foods are hot a topic to debate on, but their processing and growing seem less invasive. Organic foods - including vegetables and fruits - are grown without using (or very little use of) chemicals, processed fertilizers and pesticides. Moreover, organic foods take longer time in processing because they are naturally grown without any chemical intervention.

According to a Research Analyst at
RNCOS, “The organic foods market in the US is growing at a fast rate, but some say that the market is on the verge of saturation, which is not true. With the increasing market penetration, organic foods represent one of the fast growing segments of the US food industry.”
