Wind Turbines in UK Inadequate to Power Homes

Jan 22, 2008

UK homes, revealed a report by Encraft, are unable to light even a bulb due to insufficient wind turbines. But experts said both on and off-shore turbines were enough to meet UK homes electricity demand.

A study conducted by the environmental consultancy firm Encraft on power generation by wind energy in the UK came up with some interesting revelations. Backed by the government and the British Wind Energy Association, the report brought to light the inadequacy of home wind turbines in the UK to even light up a bulb, reported
Telegraph.

The report has raised doubts on the accuracy of official estimates on wind power in the UK, observing that wind speeds could be almost one-third lower than projected earlier, and therefore, not really generating as much electricity as was expected. A home wind turbine in the UK could take almost 15 years in some cases to be able to generate ‘green energy’ to justify its manufacture.

On the other hand, some experts state that the total number of turbines in the UK installed off- and on-shore was actually enough to meet the electricity demands of Britain’s homes.

The debate on wind power in the UK, however, continues, and its proponents strongly advocate this carbon emission-free energy from a free natural resource. Those opposed to wind turbines doubt the ability of wind farm schemes to truly deliver results, and also question the site and look of the wind turbines in the country.

However, the importance of wind power in the UK cannot be ignored, as forms an integral part of the plans for 2008-2010 of the energy sector in the country. 10% of electricity generation in the UK is expected to be met by wind power, in tandem with pan-Europe’s target of 20% electricity generation from renewable sources by 2020. But with wind power in the UK not blowing up to expectations, energy officials are being forced to revise their targets.

Wind energy in the UK has nevertheless created quite a stir amongst homeowners, as it allows them to save on their energy bills by selling extra electricity generated by their wind turbines to the national grid. The feed-in tariffs have encouraged people to adopt green energy in the country, and wind turbines have acquired considerable popularity.

A Research Analyst at
RNCOS said, “Low wind speeds are undermining the government’s plans to harness wind energy in the UK, and more importantly, is jeopardizing the effort of the country to fight global warming.”
