The US government would soon bring a law that ends the long drawn battle over marketing rights of food from cloned animals, and finally allowing the sales in the market.
Clash over marketing of milk and meat from cloned animals has reached to the head in Washington since the government is preparing to end this long drawn battle by making a law that would permit products to be sold to consumers for the first time, reported by Baltimoresun.
The new law would give right to cloning companies to give an identification (Id) number to each cloned animal and an ear tag which would emit the Id number through radio frequencies. Moreover, clone owners would take a vow to properly identify, sell and dispose animal, which would help the food processors and final sellers to know from what livestock they were getting products.
Owing to fears on safety of the food obtained from the cloned animals, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not removed a voluntary 2001 moratorium on sales. Researches have shown that 60% of the US people are not comfortable to use products from cloned animals despite the confirmation from scientists that there is no risk in using their products. Scientist also said that this food would make its own place in the market soon.
On the other hand, food companies and grocers have expressed fear that approval by the FDA would raise alarm among consumers and brought down meat and milk sales. Moreover, this approval has left the biotech companies, waiting to tap the opportunities in this market, on regulatory crossroads.
Biotechnology companies have planned to come up with a campaign that would help consumers to identify between meat and milk of cloned animal and genuine animal after government’s approval to sell these products.
Biotechnology Industry Association (BIO) is in favor of this tracking system and believes that it would assist in promotion of wider variety of choices in food supply. BIO also thinks that it would help in smooth trade transactions in the agriculture community.
A Senior Research Analyst at RNCOS said, “The US food industry is deliberately trying to delay the enactment of the new regulation of sales of cloned food. But it is ready to allow the sale of food from cloned animals despite the fact that consumers are not sure about the safety of food, making the tracking necessary.”
