Euro VI Makes Truck & Buses More Cleaner

Jan 11, 2008

The new Euro VI plan will reduce the emission of dangerous gases like nitrogen oxide and particulate matter significantly. The standards of the plan are similar to the standards of the US.

The European Commission has planned to curtail the particulate matter emission by 66% and nitrogen oxide by 80% by 2013 as compared to Euro V phase. The limit values in the new plan are predicted to equal to the US standards. The regulation will replace the directives and these directives are applicable in all EU members, as per the news published by
 Eemsonline.

In addition to strict limit values, the Euro VI has proposed inclusion of regulation for off-cycle emissions, fuel consumption measurement, CO2 emissions, conformity of in-service engines and vehicles, replacement pollution control devices and durability of pollution control devices.

The new regulation will sharply reduced the emission of particulate matter and nitrogen oxide from the European buses and trucks. As a result, air quality will improve in Europe. It is, actually, an initiative towards global harmonization as the limit values are predicted to equal to that in the US. The standards of Euro VI will help EU to align with the US for future emission standards.

As per the news published by
ENS, Gunter Verheugen, Vice President of European Commission, said, “More stringent emission limits will pave the way for cleaner trucks and buses. This is good for the health of our citizens and the environment. Industry gets a cleaner perspective and the time to prepare to produce clean, high quality vehicles without endangering its competitiveness.”

The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) has been looking for harmonization of standards throughout the world. The European truck manufacturers proclaimed in November last year they had set a goal to curtail the emission of nitrogen dioxide by 80% and particulate matter by 50% as mentioned in the Euro VI as against the emission standards of Euro V.

A Senior Research Analyst at
RNCOS said, “The European countries have been trying to deal with the problem of pollution from the automobile industry. With the growth of European economy, the volume of vehicles is increasing, thus adding to the pollution. The Euro VI has proposed measures that will help in reducing the emission of dangerous gases. Moreover, the new plan will encourage other countries also to take strong measures to deal with global warming.”
