Smartphones sales in the Asian region picked up pace in the first half of 2009 posted an increase of 142% despite economic slowdown.
According to a market intelligence firm GfK Asia, Smartphone sales in Asia seemed to have picked up pace as they had posted an increase of 142% in the first half of 2009, as reported by
Softpedia.
Smartphones accounted for triple market share among telecom products, rising from 3.5% to 10.3%. Overall sales volume managed to register growth of approx. 2% primarily due to 7% rise in the mobile phone sector.
The Asian retail technology market was driven by Smartphones in the first half of 2009. For instance, 4 out of every 10 mobile phones sold in Hong Kong were smartphones. In Korea, Smartphones had no market share in the first half of 2008 but this year they contributed 30% sales. Moreover, Thailand recorded substantial rise in Smartphone sales that rose by 152% during January-June 2009 over the corresponding period last year (2008) despite 7.4% decline in the overall retail technology sales.
The stupendous growth recorded by Smartphones in the Asian region has not surprised industry experts as they have a host of integral features that make them more versatile mobile devices which people in the technologically advanced countries such as Japan wish to have in their mobile phones. People always prefer multi-functional gadget to single function gadget as they don’t like to carry many devices for various tasks. This necessity is easily fulfilled by Smartphones.
Although the performance of Smartphone segment is below expectation, the most successful manufacturers have managed to make good sales by providing special packages and the most advanced technology.
Consumer confidence in most of the Asian countries is still very low but there has been some progress to come out of the recession. However, the data released by GfK Asia shows that there is scope for growth which will be led by the soaring Smartphones demand.
According to a Research Analyst at
RNCOS, “While the ongoing recession has slowed consumer spending, there are still huge room for growth in Smartphone category. It is clear that people always look for right deals on electronic products and they wait for IT fairs to purchase, but this data has proven that they do not hesitate to spend on better technologies.”
