Nigeria’s PC market is projected to surge by around 21.5% a year in the next five years with the intensifying competition among the local and international players.
According to a survey carried out by eShekels, a leading Information and Communication Technology (ICT) research firm, the Nigerian PC market is likely to grow at an annual average of nearly 21.5% in the coming five years, as reported by BUSINESS DAY.
In 2008, overall 407,621 computers were sold in Nigeria, out of which 211,499 were desktops while the remaining were laptops. These figures were found much higher as compared with 2007, when only 154,042 desktops and 77,966 laptops were sold.
Nigerian consumers are expected to shift increasingly towards mobility that will result in higher demand for laptops and mobile PCs in the near future. According to the survey, desktops remain preferred form of computers for most of the businesses and government departments in Nigeria, with corporate organizations are still the top buyers of computers. Of this, banks account for a significant quantity. Moreover, the businesses owned far more desktops (71%) than the laptops.
International brands like Dell and HP have proved their supremacy in the Nigerian PC market. However, strategic measures to grab a significant market share have increased the pace of marketing activities, with both local and international brands are contributing in this direction.
The companies are closely monitoring upcoming trends in the consumer market segment as well as the business-to-business segment for PCs, workstations, storage systems and enterprise servers.
While several developing economies have gained from the ICT revolution, acquiring the status of a manufacturer in hardware sub-segment, Nigeria has merely remained a consumer.
Thus, the contributions of hardware sub-segment can’t be overlooked because innovation and competency level in the sector is very critical for the economic and social growth of the country.
According to a Research Analyst at RNCOS, “With growing usage of Internet in households and at work places, the outlook for the Nigerian PC market seems very bright. This uptrend represents tremendous growth opportunities for local players to exploit the rapidly growing market. Moreover, the country has the strong potential for establishing component manufacturing facilities as it highly depends on the import of hardware components for PC assembling.”
