Maharashtra (India) plans to provide Radio-Frequency Identification tags to the commercial vehicles very soon, which will enable to track the vehicles crossing the state border.
Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation has planned that all commercial automobiles, passing through 22 check posts located at the border of the state with other adjoining states, will be provided RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) tags, as reported by Business Line.
RFID refers to a method of storing and retrieving data remotely. The RFID tags will be provided as a part of a project aimed at modernization and integration of check posts by giving fund of Rs 1,571 Crore. The joint venture of SREI Infrastructure Finance and Sadbhav Engineering has been appointed to complete the project. This project is anticipated to take off in around 18 months from now. Meanwhile, nearly 80% land acquisition for 17 check posts has so far been completed.
All the commercial automobiles crossing the check posts located on the borders of Maharashtra with Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Goa and Gujarat will be equipped with RFID to trace their movements. However, while crossing the toll-tax collection centers, these vehicles will have to face manual checking. The tag-fixation will assist the government to keep a record of the vehicular activity at the state border.
After the manual checking, details of the automobile, including tax, carriage capacity and insurance, will be entered into a computer database and a RFID tag will be attached to the automobile. Hence, every time this automobile enters or exits the 22 toll centers situated at the borders, the new RFID system will transmit its information to those toll centers.
At these check posts, a vehicle will be detained for just 75 seconds for the initial checking and 10 seconds for the second barricade. The vehicle can exit within three minutes, in case all essential documents are ready. MSRDC is also planning to introduce e-way bills that will be attached to the database of RFID. It will further assist in improving the speed of cargo movement.
According to a Research Analyst at RNCOS, "RFID is one of the best available technologies to keep a track record of the vehicles entering or exiting a state by using radio waves. The integration of RFID tags into the transportation system will help the country to track the movement of vehicles in a particular region. This technology represents the government efforts to shift from the concept of highways to e-highways and the technology has numerous applications in other sectors such as retail and healthcare."
