Wi-Fi chipset sales experienced 26% increase to 387 Million Units in 2008 over 2007 and this growth is expect to continue in 2009.
Wi-Fi Alliance and In-Stat said in a report said that Wi-Fi chipset sales surged 26% in 2008 against 2007, as reported by bizjournals.
Wi-Fi chipset volume sales reached 387 Million Units in 2008, while cellular Wi-Fi phones witnessed an increase of 52% to 56 Million Units and stationary consumer electronic devices like digital televisions, gaming consoles, printers and set-top boxes rose 51% to 48 Million Units. The sales of chipsets used in manufacturing of portable consumer electronic devices like handheld games, portable music players and camera spurred 33% to 71 Million Units. Besides, chipset sales for personal computers, including mobile Internet devices, notebooks, ultra mobile devices and mini notebooks, escalated 23% to 144 Million Units.
The strong growth in Wi-Fi chipset sales was driven by both consumer and enterprise sectors, particularly those migrating to new 802.11n high speed standard. With the convenience portable devices offer, the demand for such products (especially mini notebooks) boomed in 2008. As these products incorporate Wi-Fi feature, their strong demand led to growth in Wi-Fi sales.
Moreover, the increase in sales of smartphones due to multiple features they provide also raised Wi-Fi chipset sales. As smartphones provide entertainment and productivity simultaneously as well as they are economical, more and more people are buying them. Thus, the popularity of Wi-Fi-enabled smartphones has increased.
The growth momentum in Wi-Fi devices sales will continue in 2009. Dual-mode handsets, mobile PCs, fixed products for high speed multimedia home networking and electronic devices are expected to be the most resilient Wi-Fi products this year. Moreover, handheld gaming devices with Wi-Fi feature are projected to see strong sales. Thus, Wi-Fi chipset sales will grow robustly in 2009.
Another trend that will fuel the sales of Wi-Fi this year is the application of Wi-Fi for syncing on the fly and device-to-device connectivity.
According to a Research Analyst at RNCOS, “The sales of Wi-Fi chipsets are expected to grow at a double-digit rate in coming years on account of availability of more affordable notebooks and mobile Internet-enabled devices. The Wi-Fi Alliance is closely working to set up a standard approach for proprietary implementations of the technology. This new standard approach is likely to be finalized by 2010, which will further boost the integration of Wi-Fi in consumer electronics products worldwide.”
