Six Asia-Pacific countries were among the top 10 emerging mobile markets in the world last year, says a research report from Light Reading.
Light Reading recently released a report, “Top 10 Emerging Mobile Markets 2007”, in which it disclosed that six countries from the Asia-Pacific region added 253.4 Million subscribers, more than 79%, of 320 Million subscribers added by top ten leading mobile markets in 2007, as reported by Telecom Tiger.
The report also highlighted that four Asia-Pacific countries, India, China, Pakistan and Indonesia, occupied the top four positions in the chart. Other two countries include Vietnam and Bangladesh that came on seventh and eighth place. Economic boom in China and India is fueling growth in their mobile markets, making them the fastest growing markets with the highest number of new subscribers worldwide.
Moreover, the market share of operators in the Asia-Pacific region is expected to increase with increasing penetration of the mobile services. It is further propelled by the growth in average per capita spending (on mobile services) and penetration. Besides, change in the perception of people about mobile, from a luxury item to an essential commodity, is also being considered as a chief reason for strong growth of mobile services in this region.
In addition, spurt in the mobile markets of the Asia-Pacific region is attracting new players to invest in the fast growing mobile markets. Economic shift from developed countries to emerging countries is also giving fillip to the Asia-Pacific mobile markets where the investment has gone up significantly and mobile market is growing at faster pace.
Nicole Willing, Reporter, Light Reading, said, “So-called emerging markets have become the drivers of mobile growth, and the top 10 countries in our list alone account for about a third of the 3 billion subscribers worldwide. These are the hottest markets to watch in the mobile world, and they have plenty more room to grow”, as reported by Press Trust Of India on May 3, 2008.
According to a Research Analyst at RNCOS, “With the entrance of new players in the Asia-Pacific mobile market, competition between the new players and existing players will get more intense. Under such conditions, there are strong possibilities of further decline in prices of calls and handsets, thus taking the Indian mobile market to even higher.”
