Broadband deployment in the European Union tremendously increased last year with total revenue reached Euro 62 Billion, says EU report.
According to the 13th Progress Report on the Telecoms Market of European Commission, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland and Denmark witnessed the fastest rate of broadband deployment in 2007 with penetration rate of more than 30%, as reported by Publictechnology.
The Commission also disclosed that the UK, France, Belgium and Luxembourg, along with other European countries, surpassed the US in terms of broadband deployment last year. The total revenue generated by the broadband industry in Europe during 2007 was around €62 Billion ($96.71 Billion) and the service penetration reached 20%. Citing the tremendous growth in the broadband industry of Europe, the entire telecom industry also posted a hike of 1.9% against 2006 and touched around €300 Billion ($473 Billion) in 2007.
Moreover, the European regulatory system is specifically designed to intensify the competition in broadband market and it has started churning out results. Consumers got huge benefits last year in the form of lower prices and better services. Apart from this, consumers were benefited with increased competition in platform such as high speed fixed services, mobile broadband, and use of fibre.
Moreover, high broadband uptake continued last year all through the EU as individuals and businesses continue to leverage from the huge digital activity. Besides, businesses are growing in the European countries as their economies are growing which in turn is driving the broadband demand in the region. Improving education level of people is also boosting growth in the broadband usage in the continent.
Arrival of new technologies such as 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi and WiMAX is also contributing to extend the penetration of broadband network. Now more people have started using Internet for their activities than before. People have started using Internet on their computers and wireless devices freely. Furthermore, rising availability of low cost Internet-enabled devices in the region are facilitating users to surf the Internet anywhere, anytime.
A Research Analyst at RNCOS said, “Now its time for service providers to implement new strategies across Europe to remain in competition. Fast expansion of broadband services in the region is attracting new service providers to reap advantage from European broadband industry. This will also help in installing new technologies, thus raising the quality standard of the broadband network in the region.”
